Loure is the moniker of 23 year old Melbourne based producer Thomas Guida. His debut ‘Westside Movements’ came into fruition through French label Noire & Blanche, and the young Australian artist has since garnered support from the likes of Mixmag, Apparel Music and Yes Yeux Music.
Influenced by the progressive Melbourne music scene, as well as host of musical outfits, Loure’s blend of Jazz-inspired House delivers an idiosyncratic mix of original and touching music, made with love.
His latest release ‘Smooth Talk EP’ dropped earlier this month, and has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response, instantly racking up thousands of streams.
We chatted to him about his influences, inspirations and the gear he uses to construct his signature blend of Jazzy House tunes.
Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?
Yo, I’m doing well thank you. Today I’ve just been putting the final touches on a new live set I’m preparing.
To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
I guess ultimately my music falls under the umbrella of House. If I was to describe it in anymore depth, I’d say it also includes elements of Jazz and Deep House.
What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?
Moodymann – Black Mahogani
Yussef Kammal – Black Focus
St Germain – Tourist
Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)
J Dilla – Donuts
What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?
At the moment I’ve been staying on top of everything Henry Wu has been doing with his new project ‘Kamaal Williams’. I’m down with it all, really resonates with me.
What are some of the key pieces of gear you use to write your tracks in the studio? Or do you prefer to use software and plug ins?
Dave Smith Prophet 08
Novation Bass Station
Has your arsenal of equipment changed much since you first started?
Not particularly – I use all the same instruments/gear. I’ve been collaborating with other musicians a lot more frequently though.
Do you enjoy playing to an audience or working in the studio?
I get quite anxious before I play shows, although as soon as I start to perform I tend to shake those nerves. I really guess it all depends on what the crowd’s vibe is though – if they’re into it, then I’m into it – It’s nice to feel that connect.
If we gave you the budget to put a line-up together for a mini fest, who would you book and where would you play?
All the above acts. Venue would be 22 Beevers St, Footscray – rest in peace.
If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
I’m not entirely sure. I have a degree in Design, so that’s something for me to fall back on aha.
Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects, DJ mixes or collaborations in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
I should have another release out later this year – features a lot of talented musicians & vocalist from Melbourne. The aim is to eventually perform it all live with a band – we’ll see if things pan out.
