Interview with Jonahlo to find out about his interesting life in music

Over the course of 4 years, Jonahlo has been exploring the world of electronic dance music showing the scene his talent in building different atmospheres and textures with his music.

His constant search for selecting the right samples to create his own sound has been the key to understanding what he really wants to build, a world full of energy, feeling and depth that makes us travel to his own mind and musical journey.

Based in Bogotá Colombia, Jonahlo has been part of the Nómada Records crew, playing all around the country and is well known for his transformative DJ performances and authoritative productions.

We got the chance to speak to Jonahlo about his life in music:

Tell us about your earliest musical memory?
I remember road-tripping with my dad blasting salsa music all the way to our summer house

At what point in your life did you have that moment where you said to yourself “This is it. This is the type of music I want to create?”
I realized that I wanted to make house music the moment I discovered that I love to make people dance

Please list some of the most influential albums on your creative outlook and output:
Quincy Jones – I Heard That
John Coltrane and Don Cherry – Avant-Garde
Kerri Chandler – New York Chronicles Vol.II
Theo Parrish – American Intelligence

To name some.

What key pieces of gear/software are you using to define your sound?
The main key that defines my sound would be my record collection, my bass and an old Yamaha PS5.

What inspires you outside of music? What do you turn to when the creative well runs a little low?
I spend a lot of time aggressive rollerblading. If I’m not making music, I’m probably out skating.

What is your opinion on the ever-spreading sub-genre vine? Are there too many? Do you think there’s perhaps a sub-genre that doesn’t get the attention it deserves?
I don’t really care about if there are too many sub-genres. I think everyone is free to express themselves.

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, what do you prefer?
I love every aspect of being a musician so I’m into both of them

As a music artist, it becomes apparent that there is a huge difference between the art and the business. Is there anything about the music scene that you would personally change?
I would love to see more support to the artists and not to promoters, it seems now it’s more important to be an influencer than a musician.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar? Who shouldn’t the world sleep on?
FYI Chris, Felix Leifur, Alphonse to name some and of course my pals Felipe Gordon and Joint4nine.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
Well, I have two new Eps coming out soon with labels Night Young from Miami and Sundries from Russia.

For sure you’ll be listening to my music soon, as I have more new tracks coming out.

Famous last words?
Keep it humble and positive!
