Interview with Music Producer Gonçalo Siopa

Gonçalo Siopa is Lisbon-based DJ, and host of radio show Arrepio on Rádio Quântica. Siopa thrives to expand the upon booming Lisbon electronic music scene and beyond. Flowing between all kinds of styles from old-school to techno, and house to funk, Gonçalo Siopa’s bold progression is surely one innovation to witness and take to the dance floor.

We caught up with Gonçalo Siopa on vibe-control and staying true:

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?
I can’t really explain it, guess it’s just in my blood!
Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?
I’m focused on DJing only.
Does your material feature any collaborations?
Although I do not actually produce music, I love to collaborate with other DJs and producers on my gigs and radio show.
What’s on your current playlist?
Tough question for me, because I always play recent and older music alike. I like to mix things a bit 😉
Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.
It’s more like a communion: first of all, the crowd needs to give a chance to the music you are playing, If that happens, then you established some sort of connection, and if you work hard enough you can take them anywhere!
Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?
Honestly, I have no idea! Maybe because I remember wanting to be a DJ when I was only just 13.
What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?
Water!!!
What gets your creative juices flowing?
The crowd! Nothing beats the feeling of controlling the vibe of the people in front of you while you are behind the decks! It doesn’t happen at every gig though.
Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.
Just a pair of Technics Turntables and a good mixer.
Any side projects you’re working on?
Besides the DJing – just the radio show, ‘Arrepio’ on Radio Quantica.
How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?
The inspiration given to me by other people and artists made me a better DJ, although to be honest sometimes you move two steps forward to go back one again.
Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year?
The same as always – staying true to the music and what I believe in!
