INTERVIEW // We spend 5 min with Max TenRom and get to know him on a more personal level

Max TenRoM was born in Toulouse, the famous Pink City from Southern France. He started playing music from an early age, learning his piano skills through Jazz. His father was a guitarist and a true music lover. Max sharpened his musical ear and acquired diverse influences through his father’s wide music taste. Once he had become comfortable on the piano he switched his focus to synthesizers and acoustic drums. As a result, he naturally started exploring electronic music production and quickly delivered beats for Hip/Hop bands in France. His current style is hard to label as he uses his many influences to create is own craft. Usually dynamic, his productions can be soft or radically heavy, sometimes melancholic or uplifting and more often than not groovy and jazzy.

On stage, Max TenRoM mixes electronic and acoustic sounds with his synths, machines and acoustic drums. He uses all his energy to add live Bongos and Darbouka fills to make his live set a complete audiovisual performance. He had the chance to share the stage with great artists including Robert Babicz, Nhar, Paji, Scarfinger, Scan X, Jerome Pacman or Teho to name a few. After beautiful gigs in his city and in France, Max was also recently invited to play in the famous Nikki Beach Ibiza.

Max is signed on various underground labels such as 3000Grad, Labo T, Art Vibes, Lump Records, Cépage Music, Polyptych, Aftertech Records, Faites Leur des Disques, MakeYourNoize and Submarine Vibes. His music has been well received in the musical

industry and supported by talented artists such as Armen Miran, Paul Hazendonk, Jonas Saalbach, Marco Carola, Sabo, Paco Osuna or Soul Button to name a few. He also started gaining some attention in the streaming world as his track “Vanilla” was playlisted by the one and only Deadmau5 on Spotify. Max TenRoM does not stop at his personal project since he also has two duos called Kamanga & Bamdara already signed on Lump Records, Art Vibes, Cafe de Anatolia & Cosmovision Records (Downtempo & Ethnic music). He is also one of the founders of the CULTE collective.

We were lucky enough to spend 5 minutes with Max and got to know about his life in music and listen to his latest track.

Tell us about your earliest musical memory?
My first gig in Ibiza this summer

At what point in your life did you have that moment where you said to yourself “This is it. This is the type of music I want to create?”
I’m not sure, I already asked that question to myself. I have many musical influences and I explore different style when I create some tracks.

Please list some of the most influential albums on your creative outlook and output:
1. Daft Punk – Discovery / Random Access Memory
2. Moby – Play
3. Paul Kalkbrenner – Berlin Calling
4. Vitalic – Flashmob
5. Nicolas Jaar

What key pieces of gear/software are you using to define your sound?
I use Ableton Software with virtual instruments, and I use a Roland Juno synth and acoustic drums

What inspires you outside of music? What do you turn to when the creative well runs a little low?
Mainly nature and outdoors. Open spaces and beautiful landscapes are very inspiring for me.

What is your opinion on the ever-spreading sub-genre vine? Are there too many? Do you think there’ s perhaps a sub-genre that doesn’t get the attention it deserves?
Yes, I think they are too many, I don’t want quantity and name everything. Several styles can be in one track. Music is just music and we have to keep the magic inside. When I go to a concert or festival I like to be surprised.

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, what do you prefer?
Hard question! I would say the live audience because the stage gives intense emotions. It’s the culmination of creation.

As a music artist, it becomes apparent that there is a huge difference between the art and the business. Is there anything about the music scene that you would personally change?
Unfortunately, the ever-faster consumption has not spared the music and we do not take the time to listen to the work of an artist. I would like to change that.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar? Who shouldn’t the world sleep on?
MEZERG! A true artist

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
I’ll play soon with the artist KLINGANDE in my city in France. Also, some new releases are coming.

Famous last words?
Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent ― Victor Hugo
