Das Mörtal dropped Origins last Friday on Lisbon Lux Records, giving electronic fans a fresh batch of his brooding cuts just in time for the chill of Fall. The producer, who started out in Berlin gaining inspiration from Steve Moore and Aphex Twin before settling in Montréal, has locked down a serious following in the dark synthwave space. He’s clocked more than 28 million Spotify streams, snagged international radio airplay, and pulled coverage from spots like CLASH Magazine, KALTBLUT Magazine, and Brutal Resonance. Under his belt: a stack of EPs and albums, sets at key festivals including Osheaga, Transmusicales de Rennes, FME, and Meg Festival, and warm-up gigs for acts like Vitalic, Perturbator, and Carpenter Brut. The EP’s opener ‘Falsche Daten’ built early buzz with props from YourEDM, Post-Punk, and Decoded Magazine, plus a Most Added slot on the NACC Top 200 college chart and rotation on NewRetroWave.

Origins rolls out Das Mörtal‘s core sound with added bite, launching into the harsh, revving synths of ‘Minimal Chainsaw’ that carve out space over a driving beat, then threading through to the crisp, momentum-building lines of ‘…Now’. It’s all anchored in dancefloor-ready synth patterns that hit with straight propulsion. The highlight ‘I Just Want To Hold You (Part I)’ remixes Italo disco into a coiled, vocoder-snarled plea, its rolling bass and drifting leads pulling from Daft Punk and Kavinsky territory while holding firm to his techno-occult edge. Stacy Lee‘s video nails the mood, throwing leathered-up dancers into strobing club haze that mirrors the track’s push-pull energy.

Das Mörtal shared: “Origins as a whole is made up of tracks that delve in my past creations but that are still relevant today because they still represent the wide spectrum of music I’m still exploring and crafting.”
