Unplugged with Ghost Jnr | Interview

Ghost Jr. is emerging as a leading Belgian electronic producer and DJ, shaping a unique identity across Trance, Techno, and Eurodance. His sound draws on retro influences, atmospheric synth textures, and club-focused intensity. Building on the foundation set by his father DJ Ghost, he has performed at major Belgian festivals such as Tomorrowland, Ostend Beach Festival, and Fantasia Festival, including a Tomorrowland Cherry Moon Legends set with DJ Ghost. With over 300,000 streams and a recent signing to Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records, Ghost Jr. is poised for wider recognition.

His latest single, ‘2 phones’, released on 25 September 2026, channels this momentum, blending emotive pop melodies with driving techno rhythms and previewing an EP due in December.

We spoke with Ghost Jr. about his evolution from bedroom producer in Brasschaat to European festival stages, the inspiration behind ‘2 phones’, and his vision for the future.

Hey, thanks so much for sitting down with us today – what’s been the absolute best part of your week so far, music aside?

No worries, I feel like it has to be this one fan thanking me for making them happier. They told me that they have caught the Ghost Jr happiness bacteria and that they never want to be cured. Truly put a big smile on my face, knowing that im making people happy through music

What is your Primary Role(s) in Electronic Music? For Example, are you a DJ, vocalist, producer etc.

DJ & Producer

What is your preferred main electronic music genre/style, and what makes you resonate with it?

Happy trance: it’s trance, but happier. The music you just can’t stop dancing to and smile to. And its exactly those feelings that make me so connected to the genre

If someone wanted to understand the real vibe of you as an artist beyond the music, what’s one story from your everyday life that says it all?

The moment I see others being happy, I get happy. Seeing joy in life brings joy to my life. After a performance i did in brussels i let down a small tear, a tear of pure joy. Because i saw thousands smile in front of me

Describe your typical studio/production workflow (e.g., hardware vs. software focus, favorite gear, creative starting point).

Everything starts with a base, now that base can be a kick, a baseline, a sample, etc… i tend to find inspiration in my everyday life, record a voice note with the idea, and try to make it to my studio ASAP. Then when I sat, its puzzle time. Putting all the pieces i have in my mind on to paper, or in my case… on ableton. Therefore my favourite piece of gear has to be my laptop, followed closely by my novation launchkey

Which major music platform (Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, etc.) generates the most engagement for your work?

Spotify

Do you prefer performing Live Sets (using hardware/controllers to manipulate sound) or DJ Sets (mixing tracks)? Why?

DJ sets, during a DJ set i am able to bring the highest of quality to whoever i am performing to/for and able to fully express myself

What’s one underrated production skill you wish more electronic artists focused on?

Everyone is unique and part of what makes music so beautiful is its creativity and the ability to express emotions through waves. Therefore i feel that the only skill i wished was focused on more is the skill to listen to yourself

Do you see AI as a threat to musicians, a helpful collaborator, or something else? How do you plan to keep your music relevant as the industry changes rapidly because of these tools? By embracing AI, avoiding it, or taking a different approach?

Music is creativity. AI, as far as I know… is not creative and builds on existing ideas and knowledge. As long as AI stays controlled and unable to become independent, I see no threat, only potential dangers.

Taking my own unique approach. Creativity is key.

If you are a producer, how often do you utilize generative AI tools (e.g., for mastering, sample generation, synth patching, etc.) in your current process?

If we count correcting spelling mistakes and looking up where to find certain sounds I am thinking of, then I do use it from time to time. If not i dont, i dont even know how to operate those models haha

What is the single biggest challenge facing electronic music artists in the next 5 years?

Quantity over quality, when it should be the opposite

How would you describe your creative process when a new beat or synth line first clicks?

Pure joy, when things click i get into a ‘flow state’ what happens in ‘flow state’ is magic

What’s the toughest technical or industry obstacle you’ve faced as an electronic artist?

Opening Ableton for the first time was the biggest obstacle so far, but you learn the obstacle, and eventually you turn out to become best friends

If you could revisit one decision from your artistic journey and do it differently, what would it be?

I would go back to the start of lockdown and tell myself to practice music instead of videogames…

What’s your current favorite piece of electronic gear or plugin that you can’t stop playing with in the studio?

My novation launchkey is like a translator. Translating my ideas to soundwaves

If you could change one thing about the modern music industry overnight, what would it be?

More happiness! It’s my goal to make people happier through music, so if I can make it happen overnight… 1000 times YES

What’s one unexpected influence, maybe from outside music, that keeps showing up in your work?

My emotions
