Ethereal producer Villows shares ‘Lucid’

Under the imprint Careless Collective, Musician Villows released his brand new single ‘Lucid’ on the 07th of October. The skilled House music producer has dived into his infatuation with lucid dreams, which catalysed the making of ‘Lucid’. The single contains the juxtapositions and illusions of dreams, with its soft whispers and cries, accompanied by vivid electric guitars and mellow electric organs. Villows differentiate his sound with the use of the dense synthesiser, and this is a world away from the pop-punk creativity and performances of his high school days in New Jersey. The lyrics in ‘Lucid’ are incredibly captivating. How is the lyricism connected to the melody?

I wanted the melody and ambience of the track to sound like you were inside a dream.  I really love the way the surreal and echoey vocals of the hook bounce around, as well as how the reverb-drenched guitars/pianos tie it all together.

‘Lucid’ relays an intimate connection between two people. What is the single trying to teach the listeners about love?

I’m no expert, but to love someone so much that they’re in your dreams is a beautiful thing.

What inspires you?

Listening to music always gives me so much inspiration, even if it’s outside of the electronic genre. Uniqueness comes from combining elements from everywhere, so the more music you can expose yourself to the better. I’m also really inspired by nature. I love putting in ambient samples of birds chirping or waves crashing in the background of my songs.

At what point in your life did you have that moment where you said to yourself “This is it. This is the type of music I want to create?”

I’m not sure If I’ve ever had that moment, as the type of music I want to create is constantly evolving.  I always want to be creating something a bit different, and pushing myself to experiment in new directions.

Most underrated piece of equipment / software?

Valhalla Shimmer creates the most beautiful reverb.  It can make literally anything dreamy!

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, what do you prefer?

I definitely prefer to be in the studio creating music.  I find it so freeing and relaxing, there’s really nothing quite like it.

What’s the weirdest or most amazing reaction you’ve had to your music?

I can’t really remember anything too out of the ordinary.  It always means so much when people tell me they’ve been enjoying my music or that it’s affected them in some way.  It’s immensely inspiring to hear those things as an artist, and I’m really grateful I get the opportunity to share my art!

Where is dance music going?

Dance music as a whole feels like it has become exceptionally broad. With modern tech making it easier than ever to create electronic music from a laptop, we’ll hear its influences more and more in every genre.

All-time favourite album?

Such a hard question… honestly, I don’t think I can answer this, but ODESZA’s new album is crazy good if you haven’t heard it yet!

What have you got in the pipeline for the near future?

A couple more singles before the end of the year, and then the full ‘Dreams’ EP in early 2023.
